They have amazing graphics, especially on the covers, and always include a soap opera story inside. Although some of them are collectible, many of the lower grade quality comics are considered useless. I find a new life for them by cutting the already damaged pages up into pieces for my collage or mixed media art.

Paired with other vintage elements, such as pages from 1950s magazines, and fun phrases, these comic book images come to life as greeting cards and collage art. You can see my growing collection of original OOAK prints here.
I remember making one in particular that depicted the Boston Tea party. After I made the ship, I made paper cones, coated them in glue and covered them in tea from teabags. I then attached them to people on the ship so it looked like they were pouring the tea into the sea. When I took it to school the teacher didn't believe I made it myself - she insisted my mother helped me!

I still enjoy making dioramas today, and this one features a bunch of vintage images from The Graphics Fairy. I love the shape of this tin - a sort of elongated oval. I added moss, bark, beads, fabric flowers and magnetic letters. You can see more details about the item in my Etsy listing, here.
Her choices are all perfect for the upcoming Spring season and includes a everything from a shabby garden box to an old apple picking tool. Ada also features one of my own vintage items, a grass seed sack.
I'm not sure what I plan to do with them just yet, but I thought I would share them here. They are free for you to use in your artwork and I would love to see what you do with them! I'm thinking of making iron-on transfers for tea towels or an apron, or maybe as a graphic for a recipe card.
I've got plenty more to share, from recent vintage finds to my latest in mixed media art. I thought I would start off by sharing some of this fabulous paper ephemera I recently came across at a local flea market.

This vintage image has been scanned with 800dpi and features two Victorian children from the late 1800s to very early 1900s. It was part of an advertisement for a grocery store in Elmira, N.Y.
Thanks to the wonderful vegetarian prawns offered by May Wah Vegetarian Market, I was able to authentically recreate a Shrimp Scampi - Oreganata recipe. These huge vegetarian "prawns" are fat and calorie free and are large enough to slice in half lengthwise to increase the serving size and surface area for flavor enhancement. Get your own vegetarian shrimps here for less than $6.00 and try my Scampi Oreganta recipe - you will be surprised how they take on the flavors of the sauce. May Wah has a lot of great products for vegetarians, which are much more flavorful and realistic compared to the soy products offered at the grocery stores.

Vegetarian Shrimp Scampi Oreganata Recipe

1 package vegetarian prawns, thawed and sliced in half lengthwise
a few tablespoons of olive oil
2 tables spoons butter
chopped garlic, at least 6 cloves (I use A LOT more)
1/2 cup white cooking wine
1 lemon

Topping:
2 tablespoons melted butter
1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
3/4 cup bread crumbs, preferably panko
chopped garlic, at least 2 cloves

To serve:
Cooked rice, linguine or other pasta

Directions:
Heat up the oil in a pan. Add the garlic and lightly saute for about 3 minutes. Add the prawns and brown on each side, about 6 minutes total. Add the wine and the juice from the lemon, and cook another 5-6 minutes until the sauce bubbles and thickens slightly. Transfer the shrimp and sauce mixture to an oven-safe dish such as a pyrex or casserole.

Mix the melted butter and breadcrumbs until well combined. Stir in the fresh parsley and additional chopped garlic. Top the shrimp with the breadcrumb mixture and broil in the oven until browned. Serve with the linguine (my preference) or rice. To create additional sauce for the pasta, simply repeat the first section using oil/butter, garlic, wine and lemon or double the recipe above. I usually make a separate sauce by first making a roux with the garlic/oil base and add fat free half and half to create a creamy scampi sauce that perfectly compliments the vegetarian shrimp.Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02947117104841057824noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3627142419375540097.post-86678908321931259172010-11-14T07:44:00.001-05:002011-02-16T11:17:12.144-05:00Now, Voyager
"I'm not afraid. I'm not afraid, mother. I'm not afraid."

In this defining moment, Bette Davis' character, Charlotte, in Now, Voyager realizes that her independence is the most important thing she owns. She seems shocked and amazed that she really isn't afraid. Nothing can take this sense of freedom from her, certainly not her controlling mother or her threats. When Charlotte's mother dies, she feels guilt and a sense of responsibility. Her evolution into an amazing, independent woman continues when she selflessly gives her love and attention to a young girl, Tina, who happens to be the daughter of the one real love she had in her life, Jerry. Her freedom becomes even more obvious when she chooses the girl over the man, proving that she does not need a man to be happy and content. If only all of today's girls were made to watch this film.

Here's to independence and the painful but rewarding journey towards it.Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02947117104841057824noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3627142419375540097.post-28565443454399553442010-11-11T07:00:00.001-05:002011-02-16T11:18:19.330-05:00Buried treasure in my basement - vintage music magazinesYou can only imagine my surprise when I came across an old barrel in my basement, full of papers from two owners ago. Inside the barrel were many personal documents, which I destroyed, but amongst the bank slips and canceled checks I found some interesting music magazines, all in excellent condition.

The pamphlets were used in the 1950's and 1960's as educational tools for students. It's a shame to think of the state of musical programs in today's schools; they are practically non-existent or very limited. My favorite of the booklets is the 1960 volume on Poland, which honors the post-war country. You can take a better look at the Young Keyboard Jr. magazines in my etsy shop, here.Rebeccahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02947117104841057824noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3627142419375540097.post-4693062235556266532010-11-10T13:47:00.002-05:002011-02-22T10:49:18.373-05:00Vintage Greetings for ThanksgivingI'm currently working on a series of lovely little Thanksgiving greeting cards (amongst a few other other projects I've got going simultaneously, of course). These cards are simple to make and relatively inexpensive. A package of 20 blank natural-colored cards with envelopes costs around $5.00.

Thanks to The Graphics Fairy and images from my own collection, I'm able to create a nice variety of vintage image inspired cards. After downloading and printing out the images from her blog, I used a paintbrush to apply glue and added coordinating colored glitter to enhance the designs. I'm also experimenting with flocking on some of the designs. I left the inside of the cards blank, but put an extra piece of rough-edged paper behind the note area for some added distinction.

I'll post back with a completed set once I have finished.
